Session title: Quality of life, palliative care, ethics and health economics
Background
Patients with acute myeloid leukemia are treated with intensive chemotherapy, and usually have long hospitalizations and severe treatment side effects that may have a negative influence on the health-related quality of life.
Aims
The aim of this work was to study the health –related quality of life of acute myeloid leukemia survivors in complete remission.
Methods
Arabic translations of the SF-36 and the Hospital-Anxiety-Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires were used. The patients replied to these questionnaires during their medical consultation.
Results
Thirty –nine patients were included in the study with a median age of 42. Twenty one patients had acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 18 patients had acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). The median duration after the diagnosis was 74 months (13-190). All these patients were in complete remission. The SF-36 results showed no difference in physical or mental scales compared to the population norms. The mean physical score found was 71,5. The mean mental score was 70,9. The scores of the different domains were also similar to the population norms, ranging between 61,6 and 85,8. The lowest score was associated with the domain of fatigue.
The HADS questionnaire results showed a pathologic score (>= 11) in 14% of patients in the domain of anxiety. The anxiety score was doubtful (ranging from 8 to 10) in 17% of patients. No pathologic results were found in the domain of depression, but the score was doubtful in 17% of patients.
Conclusion
Survivors of acute myeloid leukemia have normal global health-related quality of life. But they suffer often from anxiety disorders and still require counseling.
